The International Society for Terrain-Vehicle Systems (ISTVS) congratulates Sally Shoop on receiving the 2026 Can-Am Civil Engineering Amity Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
The award recognizes civil engineers who have made outstanding contributions toward strengthening professional relationships between the civil engineering communities of the United States and Canada. Established in 1972, the Can-Am Amity Award honors individuals whose work has significantly advanced collaboration across the two countries.
Dr. Sally Shoop
Dr. Shoop, a research engineer at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, New Hampshire, was recognized for her leadership in vehicle mobility on unpaved, frozen, and snow-covered terrain. Her work has improved the safety and accessibility of civil and military vehicle operations in cold regions around the world.
Her research focuses on the interaction between vehicles and seasonal terrain conditions, including snow, ice, and frozen ground. Through extensive modeling and field experimentation in the Arctic, Antarctica, and northern Europe, her work has supported military and civilian mobility operations, including projects related to NATO and NORAD, deep-snow runways for wheeled aircraft in Antarctica, and expedient runways in Arctic environments.
Dr. Shoop has authored more than 200 publications in the fields of cold-regions engineering, terramechanics, and vehicle mobility. She has also played a major leadership role within ISTVS, serving as President of the society, Deputy General Secretary for the Americas, Conference Co-Chair for ISTVS 2025, and recipient of the 2021 Bekker-Reece-Radforth Award. She is also a Fellow of ISTVS and has contributed to the community through her editorial work with the Journal of Terramechanics.
ISTVS proudly recognizes Dr. Shoop’s achievements and congratulates her on this well-deserved honor!
